GRAUBERG
intervention

September 6th – October 25th, 2008

Space emerges through control of the line. Jarmuschek+Partner present the young artist GRAUBERG from Dresden with objects and drawings in his third solo exhibition Intervention at the gallery. In his work the artist deals playfully with perception and expectation which he newly defines through an abstract pairing of area and line. The line exists without compromise and demonstrates its power. The construct brings area of space into being by putting several surfaces over one another in a stencil-like way. At the same time leaving irritating emptiness in the spaces between. The freedom in his work appears as the result of his choice of restriction.

Researching the line and exploring the reaction to it comes from the exact constitution of non-coincidental structures where every line has its right. In this aesthetic process his drawings appear on the level of feeling which provokes personal associations and surprises. GRAUBERG breaks the expectations of his audience by alienating the created perception of apparent landscapes.

Irritations are awakened through the opening of these fictitious spaces within the play of lines which the observer experiences as intervention. It’s amazing how GRAUBERG plays with the expectations of the observer by destroying the suggestive insinuation of landscapes through alienation. The drawings are complemented with wooden objects, paper maché and glass that actually create spaces. This intervention provokes the interaction of the observer to go around the objects. He consciously puts them into relationship with his drawings thus physically forcing the observer to examine space, line, area and time. The lines, parallels and constructs open further layers and spaces demanding active perception from the observer. Comprehension of the free dimensional objects in the room comes from observing and exploring it from all sides; it makes possible the projection between the objects and drawings.

Both medias -drawing and creating objects- demand a new way of seeing, because they contain figurative and abstract elements. GRAUBERG reduces both art forms down to their necessary components through the continuous oscillation between the free personal ideal and the definite character of the graphics in the work. He thus opens a new structure which creates sensuality through the essential.

GRAUBERG was born in Dresden in 1972; he studied at the HfBK Dresden and became Professor Kerbach’s master student. In 2004 he received the scholarship from the artist house Schloss Wiepersdorf. In the last years he has shown his work in different solo exhibitions in Germany and participated in the “Twenty-Four Living Artists in China” exhibition in 2004 in China.
